Victorians at the AusChamps

It’s Australian Champs week, in Brisbane.  The nine day Carnival features four Championship races – Sprint, Middle, Long and Relay – and three Australian Schools Championship races – Sprint, Long, and Relay.  Check out all of the fantastic photos on the Carnival facebook page

FIRST WEEKEND

Things kicked off with a fast paced Sprint at the University of Queensland’s Brisbane campus.  Competitors seemed to handle the complexity well, with most winning times being below 12 minutes.

Results, Splits, Livelox

Congratulations to our Australian Sprint Champions and placegetters!  Patrick Jaffe and Torren Arthur were 3rd and 5th in M21E, with Milla Key taking 2nd in W20E.

  • First place:  Aleks Lahde, Keely Williams, Judi Herkes, Libby Meeking, Chris Norwood, Tim Hatley
  • Second place: Charlotte Preston, Milla Key, Sue Key, Victoria Greenhan, Alex Tarr
  • Third place:  Patrick Jaffe

Torren Arthur, Milla Key and Patrick Jaffe qualified in the Top 8 to run the “Dash for Cash”, with Milla finishing second in W21E.

Next up was the Australian Long Distance Champs, held at Platypus Cliffs, Wivenhoe; described as “Classic long distance terrain with big hills, fast and slow run and rocky detail, huge cliffs and vaguer flat areas where termite mounds will be your guide”.  Tough conditions saw a spread of times in most classes.

Results, Splits, Livelox

MIDWEEK

The Australian Schools Orienteering Champs (ASOC), and the 3 day Run The River public races took place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with start times brought forward to beat the heat.

Ella Maja Lang had three top 10 finishes, including a fantastic 2nd place in the Relays, along with 9th in the Sprint and 10th in the Long in Junior Girls.  Top 20 performances in the Sprint came from Xander Greenhalgh, Lydia Stott, Keely Williams and Matthew Layton in the Sprint, and Keely Williams, Matthew Layton and Corin Pope in the Long.  Matthew and Xander both finished 5th in the Relay, and Keely finished 7th, on their respective legs.  Our Junior Boys first team finished 7th overall out of 21 Relay teams, keeping their heads while there were a number of mispunches happening around them.  Senior Boys were 8th and Junior Girls were 10th.

The team featured a number of newcomers this year, and it was great to see them doing well, and no doubt learning from their first ASOC experience. Victoria was unable to match the performances of winning team ACT, but they should be very proud of their performances in tough hot conditions.
