Orienteering Victoria Supporting La Trobe University Project

This year Orienteering Victoria has provided support to La Trobe University’s CS & IT by participating in an industry project. Earlier this year OV was approached by one of our members, Damian Spencer asking if OV could participate in the CS & IT Industry program and provide an industry project for students to work on.  A project was selected by OV for the development of a scalable app that was simple, easy, fun to use, and cost effective, that could be used for scoring Orienteering events in environments such as primary schools, and other locations where GPS referenced maps are not available.
Five teams, each comprising five CS & IT students have been working on this project for the last six months, developing out their apps, with the announcement of the winning team taking place on 21 November at the La Trobe University Engineering & IT showcase.
Two of the apps have great potential and OV is now starting to work with La Trobe in developing out one of these apps with the view to offering it to schools for use, and potentially using it in some of the OV urban events.
