Vic Relays at Royal Park, Sunday 17 March

Melbourne Forest Racers warmly invites competitors of all ages and experience levels to the 2024 Victorian Orienteering Club Relays! We’ve put together a fantastic organising team who are ready to deliver a welcoming event open to those of all abilities!

  • Course Setter: Angus Haines
  • Event Controller: Brodie Nankervis
  • Organisers: Brodie Nankervis, Patrick Jaffe and Nicola Dalheim (MFR)
  • Mass Start for all courses at 10am, course closure time is 12:30pm (TBC).
  • Location: Royal Park, Parkville. Exact assembly area TBC in final bulletin! Public Transport is strongly recommended as no parking will be provided specifically for the orienteering event (From the CBD, take a tram 58 towards West Coburg or the Upfield train to Royal Park). There are public toilets at either end of Royal Park (here or here)
  • Map: Royal Park (originally mapped by Fredrik Johansson 2017, updated by Fredrik in 2024); 1:4000, 2m Contours; p
reviously used for Sprint into Spring 2017, Melbourne Sprint Weekend 2018
  • Terrain Description: Park area with many trees, thickets and other vegetation features, plus a good network of paved and unpaved paths. Fantastic views of the CBD from many parts of the map. MFR would like to thank Bayside Kangaroos Orienteering Club for kindly letting us make use of their map.
  • Courses/classes: There are four courses. The course details are: 1 – approximately 6km – hard navigation; 2 – approximately 4.5km – hard navigation; 3 – approximately 3.0km – moderate navigation; 4 – approximately 2.0km – easy navigation.

There are five classes teams can enter, as follows:
1 – 3 legs, all doing different variations of Course 1
2 – 3 legs, all doing different variations of Course 2
3 – 3 legs, all doing different variations of Course 3
4 – 3 legs, all doing different variations of Course 4
5 – 3 legs Mixed – First leg does Course 4, second leg does Course 2, last leg does Course 3, with different variations.

Entries
Club team managers will enter full team relays. Please advise your club relay manager if you would like to be put in a relay team. If you prefer to email the organisers directly we will ensure you get a run, but it may be in any team, including a team that does not have three runners. But you will get a run and you will have a great time! Team line-ups must be finalised by 8am on the day of the event.

Entry fees
Entry is paid by your club’s Team Manager, NOT by individuals. Team managers will enter team details into Eventor and organise a direct payment to MFR. Entry fees for members are $25 per adult (i.e. $60 for a team of 3 adults), $12 per junior (u-21) and members’ family cap of $52. Non-members can only compete if they are members of a club and Orienteering Victoria. OV membership fees are $35 for adults and $6 for juniors. Clubs have their own range of free or very minimal membership fees.

Training
MFR is holding some other events in the lead up to the Vic Relays
