Advice and Information

Orienteering Victoria staff are able to assist in a wide range of areas:

  • How to get an orienteering program up and running in your school
  • Which parks are available for school use?
  • Where can we get the equipment to establish an orienteering program?
  • Are there maps for the areas that we would like to use?

Come and Try Orienteering – Parkland Orienteering

Half day sessions are organised on a needs basis for both Primary and Secondary Schools. The sessions generally run for 2 – 2.5 hours. The orienteering sessions is all set up for you and maps prepared. You arrive with your students, our staff teach your students who will spend 2 – 2.5 hours learning to read maps and navigate. Parkland areas generally used: Brimbank Park, Cardinia Reservoir Park, Eltham Lower Park, Darebin Parklands, Hanging Rock – Macedon, Jells Park, Westerfolds Park.

Bushland Orienteering

Half and Full day bush orienteering is provided on a needs basis for secondary students. Sessions are generally 2 – 2.5 hours  and provide for a range of courses to be experienced. Areas close to Melbourne generally used:
  • Cardinia Reservoir Park - Narre Warren
  • Lysterfeild Lake Park - Endeavour Hills
  • Watsons Glen – Yarra Glen
  • Wellington Chase – Belgrave ( on hold dur to fire damage)
  • Macedon Pines – Macedon
  • Gilwell Park - Gembrook
  • Bullengarook - near Gisborne

Team Building and Communication Orienteering Activity

This is a format very popular with Year 9 and 10 students. Students work in groups of 5 to solve navigational and associated problems. The emphasis is on planning, team work, communication, meeting deadlines and working towards group outcomes.  ( same areas as above).

Professional Development Courses

Three levels of Professional Development courses are available to teachers.

  • PASE
    • 1.5 – 3 hr introductory courses enabling teachers to set up basic 3 session programs in their schools.
    • Costs vary according to location, numbers and length of session.
  • LEVEL O “Orientation to Orienteering” Course
    • This is a 3 - 4  hour theory and practical course, usually held on one day.
    • It provides teachers with all the skills and knowledge to set up a comprehensive, sequential orienteering program in their school and to use nearby parklands.
    • Course fee  POA
  • LEVEL ONE NCAS ACCREDITATION ( Sports Specific)
  •           Recognition of Prior Learning ( RPL) for the General Principles section of this course - is credited to 
  •           all qualified PE and Outdoor Education Staff
    • This Sports Specific is a one day course ( 8 hours) is designed for PE and OE teachers ( with experience of teaching in the out of doors).
    • It is a comprehensive, practically based, sports specific course designed for teachers aiming to extend their orienteering programs into the bush environment.
    • Course fee = $80 incl GST ( to members: $160 to non members)

Map Making

Our skilled map makers are able to offer a high standard of map making.
  • Black and white map – schoolgrounds, nearby parklands, campsites
  • Full colour maps – for detailed parklands, campsites and bush areas

Fees = basic black and white schoolground map is $300 + GST. Costs vary depending on – quality of base map, size of area to be mapped, detail to be field-worked and distance to be travelled.
