Peter Moore (Rockhopper Orienteering Club)

Peter Moore was one of the founders of Rockhopper Orienteering Club. Amongst his many roles in Orienteering he was Organiser of the 1981 Australian Orienteering Relay Championships at Haphazard Reef. He was also a keen cyclist and I believe he completed the Paris-Brest-Paris race more than 15 times.

The following is from the current President of Richmond Harriers. (“Tough as Nails” is the title of the book which covers the first 100 years history of the Club):

It is with great sadness that I advise the members of Richmond Harriers of the passing of one of our club legends, Peter Moore. Peter passed away at his home on the morning of Wednesday 22nd May after losing his long battle with Prostrate cancer. As always Peter had faced this battle with great courage and had remained active long into his illness in true Richmond Harriers “Tough as Nails” spirit.

Peter was a tenacious and talented runner long into his life and a much admired member of the Richmond Harriers for over 40 years, winning the Cross Country Club Championship in 2003 as the oldest winner at 55 years of age. He ran an incredible 31 Melbourne Marathons, his last while battling cancer, and also ran every Richmond Malvern Challenge for 30 years. Peter was a keen and talented cyclist and was the legend of Abbotsford Cycles.

Peter will be forever remembered by his family, friends and team members as a humble, generous and unassuming gentleman who displayed enormous courage and competitive spirit in everything he did.

Michael Hubbert.
