For the first event of the series it was great to see such a large turnout with 149 entries – thank you to everyone for coming along and supporting our Victoria schools team fundraising. This year, at every Autumn Bush Series event for people who have pre-entered there is a spot prize draw for the return of their entry fee (one adult entry fee). Our first winner is Helen Alexander. Sun 10 March - Event 2: Petticoat Gully Results WinSplits This week our thanks goes to Jenny Bourne for her superb course setting within the gold mining area at Petticoat Gully, and to Eureka for running this event. The positioning of the finish chute provided good spectating and the sun shone long enough for people to relax and talk after their runs and to take part in the prize giving. This week, the spot prize draw for participants who have pre-entered went to Suzanne O’Callaghan. At each event there will be a spot prize draw for participants who have pre-entered with the major prize being the return of their entry fee (one adult entry fee). Plus is also a major spot prize for the series for people who pre-enter 5 or more events for a STR8 compass. Just a reminder To receive your ‘winners’ and/or ‘sprint finish’ prize you must be there for the prize giving which is held at 1pm at each event. This also means that you need to finish by this time to be eligible for these two prizes. Sun 24 March - Event 3: Nerrina Results WinSplits The Nerrina Arena What a nice setting for the arena today at the Little Bendigo school centred around what must be Australia’s smallest athletics track. The hotly contested Sprint Finish competition featured half a lap of the track which made for entertaining viewing. Thank you to course setter Patrick Jaffe and the Victoria High Performance team for putting on such a fantastic event today. Patrick set some great courses, which were in a middle distance style on a very technical area of the Nerrina map, and involved a challenging mix of intense map reading, route choices and direction changes. Today the spot prize draw for Participants who have pre-entered went to Jenny Bourne. The Victoria High Performance team, in recognition that it is much easier on the organisers if participants pre-enter, added free entry to the next event to Jenny’s prize. In addition to the spot prize draw for ‘participants who have pre-entered’ with the prize being the return of their entry fee (one adult entry fee) at each event, there is also a major spot prize for the series for people who pre-enter 5 or more events for a STR8 compass. Sun 05 May - Event 4: Eppalock South Results WinSplits Our good luck with the weather continued at Eppalock South with perfect conditions for running. Thank you to course planner Glen White and Yarra Valley Orienteers for hosting the event this weekend. The terrain was very different from the last two events with its very subtle gully spur and although at first sight the courses looked easily achievable, Winsplits shows that a number of competitors were challenged in finding their controls at least once on their course. Maybe next year we should introduce an additional competition – for the competitor who manages to get fewest pink cells on Winsplits for the entire series. The positioning of the finish chute again provided good spectating and to everyone’s delight was a downhill leg. This event nearly saw a first sprint finish tie breaker with Geoff Adams and Darren Eenjes tied for first on course M3. However Darren did not stay for the tie breaker run off and forfeited the winner title to Geoff. Remember that at each event there is a spot prize draw for participants who have pre-entered with the winner receiving their entry fee back (one adult entry fee) plus a few other goodies. This week’s winner was John Chellew. At the end of the series the names of people who pre-entered 5 or more events will go into a draw for a STR8 compass Winners of courses 1 W: Linnea Karjalainen 1 M: Ben Goonan 2 W: Liliia Glushchenko 2 M: Martin Steer 3 W: Paivi Karjalainen 3 M: Darren Eenjes 4 W: Sophie Arthur 4 M: Anttijussi Karjalainen 5 W: Deb Sutherland 5 M: Matthew Layton Score: Marie Platt Winners of the finish sprint 1 W: Linnea Karjalainen 1 M: Archie Neylon 2 W: Heather O’Donnell 2 M: John Steer 3 W: Victoria Greenhan 3 M: Geoff Adams 4 W: Sophie Arthur 4 M: Luke Feuerherdt 5 W: Angelina Kozma 5 M: Matthew Layton Fastest finish sprint of the day The overall winner of the finish sprint was again Archie Neylon who has now gone fastest at three of the four events to date. Archie’s time was 25 secs. Next closest was John Steer with 28secs. Sun 26 May - Event 5: Irishtown Results WinSplits The weather forecast was not looking ideal for Sunday and organiser Greg Tamblyn came along with a few extra tents just in case they were needed. However the series luck continued and although it was on the cool side, there was no rain. Thank you to course planner Andrew Hunter and Bayside Kangaroos Orienteers for hosting the event this weekend. On picking up the map at the start there looked to be an awful lot of contours and climb. However closer inspection of the map revealed that the contour interval was 2.5 metres rather than the usual 5 metres. Still a lot of climb on the courses though. Most courses stayed on the spur gully terrain, with courses 1 and 2 also getting a taste of some gold mining in the north of the map. The Irishtown map does not have many tracks, which meant that Andrew had to get creative for the easy course. From all accounts the course 5 participants loved the use of the water channels as “pseudo” tracks. In the unofficial “No Pink Cells in Winsplits ” competition Natasha, Patrick, Toph, Artem, Liliia, Margi, Martin, Mark B, Paivi, Deb S, Suzanne, Torren, David R, Darren, Peter Y and Oscar have no pink cells indicating clean runs. The winner of this event’s prize draw for pre-entering was Anttijussi Karjalainen. For the final event at Creswick we are changing the rules – the prize draw winner will need to be at the Event 6 presentations to win the prize. If they are not present we will draw out another name. The draw for the STR8 thumb compass for people who pre-enter 5 or more events will run the same way. You will have to be present at the series awards presentation to be held after the Vic Middle Champs to be in with a chance of winning. Event 5 Course Winners 1 W: Natasha Key 1 M: Patrick Jaffe 2 W: Liliia Glushchenko 2 M: Martin Steer 3 W: Paivi Karjalainen 3 M: Bruce Arthur 4 W: Milla Key 4 M: Lachlan Feuerherdt 5 W: Angelina Kozma 5 M: Oscar Wallis Score: Rod Gray Winners of the finish sprint 1 W: Natasha Key 1 M: Archie Neylon 2 W: Liliia Glushchenko 2 M: Damian Spencer 3 W: Amber Louw 3 M: Eric Louw 4 W: Sarah Love 4 M: Lachlan Feuerherdt 5 W: Angelina Kozma 5 M: Oscar Wallis Fastest finish sprint of the day Archie Neylon continues to cement his place as the series fastest finish sprinter, having now been the fastest at four of the five events. Archie’s time was 24 secs. Next closest was Amber Louw in 29secs. Series Standings Updated series standings after five events are HERE. Series results will be determined from your best five scores. Sat 8 June - Event 6: Creswick Diggings Results WinSplits The Vic Autumn Series has now finished with the last event being held on Saturday at Creswick Diggings, which was also part of the Pure Gold! QB3day. Course setter Dion Keech did not give us an easy finish with some challenging courses that had a mix of fast open running and steep detailed and sometimes scrubby gully lines. He even managed to find some very deep holes, masquerading as erosion gullies, to place controls in on courses 1 & 2 that took some thought on how to get in / out of. Then finally we reached the most gnarly finish chute of the series. Archie Neylon once again aced the finish chute sprint with a time of 17 secs. The event also saw its first sprint finish run off, after brothers Lachlan and Luke Feuerherdt tied for the sprint finish on course 3M with a winning time of 24 seconds. The run off was very close with Lachlan finishing just ahead of Luke by launching his body forward over the finish line. Thank you to Lachlan and Luke for participating in the run-off.
