MapLink – Stay Active, Stay Safe, Stay Connected

While organised orienteering events throughout Australia are suspended, Orienteering Victoria is offering MapLink – a great way to stay active by informally self exercising safely with a map, while staying connected with your friends and to your sport.

MapLink will offer pdf versions of our upcoming Park Street events.  You’ll be able to download and print maps with a new course, run or walk it at any time that suits you, then share your routes and times, stories and photos.

MapLinks are released during the week of the corresponding fixtured event. MapRun is set to start from 12 noon on the same day, if enabled.

Share your results – use our Virtual PAS scoring system to tell everyone how you went.  Instructions below

Share your comments, routes, selfies etc on our new MapLink Facebook page – be social but at a safe distance!

Exercise Safely, Stay Local and Keep Your Distance

MapLink and DIY are intended to allow you to exercise locally; if there is no MapLink near you, check out the DIY Library instead – we have hundreds of maps of all types across Melbourne, as well as links to other extensive map libraries – and we’re adding more every day, including Ballarat local maps.

Note that most parks remain open for individual exercise only, following social distancing rules. However, facilities such as BBQs, playgrounds, toilets, viewing platforms, picnic tables etc, are probably CLOSED.  Check the websites for Parks Victoria and your local council before using a park based map.

Follow a few simple measures to keep yourself and others safe and healthy:

  • If you’re feeling unwell, stay home
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before leaving home and as soon as you return
  • Drive straight to the start; no stopping to fill the tank or visit the supermarket
  • Exercise by yourself or with your partner or family member who lives with you
  • No carpooling or meetup arrangements
  • Avoid contact with others.  Stay at least 2 metres away
  • Avoid touching surfaces such as light poles, playground equipment, seats, fences, gates etc. There is no need to touch the object where the control is
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth

How MapLink Works

Here’s how it works:

  • MapLink offers an opportunity for local exercise by providing new courses
  • Course setters provide pdf versions of their upcoming map and course, for uploading
  • A Map Link is created and shared via this page. You’ll see 3-4 new Map Links every week
  • You can run or walk the course any day or  time you like; Map Links have no expiry
  • Use our Virtual PAS self scoring system to tell us your start and finish time, distance, and the controls you went to.  We’ll have our experts on the job to check if anyone is exaggerating their performance!
  • Share your route, funny stories and selfies on our Facebook page

MapLink and MapRun

Most MapLink courses will be set up in MapRun. Here’s how to use MapRun with MapLink:

MapRunF Instructions for MapRun and DIY – Updated 24 March 2020

Before you start

Charge your phone. You will get poor GPS accuracy when your phone tries to conserve a dwindling battery.

Download MapRunF app from the App Store (Iphone) or PlayStore(Android)

MapRunF replaces MapRun, with simpler menus and better handling of the Mass Start.

Accept the prompts for notifications and location when they pop up

Enter your details into the MapRun app (NAME etc). All details are required, and only used for event administration. The email address will only be used for essential communications.

Head to your selected start location with your printed map, after the designated start time advised with the Map Link (eg 12 pm).

Open the App and:

  • click EVENTS NEAR ME (it may take a minute or two to turn on your GPS and get a fix)
  • select your course out of the available Maprun events, ie Run60, Run45, PW
  • press GOTO START, and move to the centre of the Start Triangle to detect the Start which is the beginning of your Competition timing.
  • the map will be visible on your phone.

Your phone will record the controls that you visit with an audible beep, without any further action.

Occasionally your GPS is less accurate, and a particular control won’t be automatically registered. Just continue on till the Finish, when MapRunF will stop tracking your route.  Ensure the Finish is registered, ie beeps, and turns green

If you have internet connectivity the results will automatically upload to the MapRun server.  If the phone is still asking you to upload Results, check your connection to the Internet (Data Allowance), and upload results when you have internet connectivity.

You can then view all scores and/or My Results (tracking, splits, rate, distance, etc.)

MapRun results can also be found at

MapLink FAQs

Here are the answers to some of the common questions about MapLink.  Question not answered here? Post it to our Maplink Facebook page, or email it to [email protected]

Do MapLink courses expire?

No. Once released, they remain available for use at any time.

Is there a set “competition” period?

No. You can use our virtual scoring system to self score, any time you like.

Are all MapLink courses also in MapRun?

We are hoping to have most, if not all, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night winter courses in Maprun. If a MapLink course is in MapRun, we will tell you when we release the link.

When and where are new MapLink courses released?

No later than the day that the event would have occurred, but in the morning. In some cases if a MapLink course is ready, it will be released beforehand (generally one day ahead)

New MapLinks are released via this web page, and the MapLink facebook page.

How do I know where the start is?

The start will be at the same place listed in the printed Park Street fixture. You can also find start locations in Eventor, and we will provide them along with MapLinks.

When should I do my course?

On any day or time that works for you. We suggest avoiding early evening when more people are out exercising.

Should I record my results?

Yes – not only does it gives all something to talk about, but it gives us valuable info into where and when you prefer to orienteer. The process is very quick and easy; and Saving is automatic.

What happens if other people see where I went?

The virtual scoring system does not show which controls you went to; only your elapsed time, and distance if you choose to enter it. Its up to you whether and when to publish your route on other social media.

What if there are no maps near where I live?

Please check out the DIY Map Library, which already contains hundreds of maps, with more being added to fill gaps. We want everyone to stay local.  Some people are making their own maps in areas where few or none exist. Tell us if you cant find a map close to you and we’ll find some!

Will MapLink include other types of orienteering such as MelbushO?

At this stage it is too early to tell, with many factors to be taken into consideration.

What other orienteering activities are there?

This is a great time to learn new skills like mapping or course setting, or try some virtual training.  Check the upcoming weekly O News bulletins for ideas.

What happens if there are tighter restrictions on outdoor exercise?

We are closely monitoring this on a daily basis and will respond accordingly and quickly if/when the time comes.

Will MapLink continue once orienteering returns to normal?

We expect MapLink to play a role in a staged return to normal operations later in the year.
