Park Street Orienteering – Summer is Heating Up

As January draws to a close, it’s time to start thinking about the upcoming Park Street Champs!  Qualifiers get underway next week, so check out the Champs website.  To nominate for the Finals, you’ll need to use a BLUE control card, and compete on the correct course for your age group.  Qualifiers will be held in every series over the next few weeks – check the schedule. The Final is on Thursday February 28, at St Helena.

Meanwhile, here’s a look back at last week, and a look forward to this week. With a very full program, there’s bound to be an event for you!

TUESDAY – Control descriptions like “froggy rocker” kept things fun at Seabrook, a scenic suburb with plenty of parkland. This week sees a return to last week’s Champs venue, using the southern section and starting from Rosehill Park – a chance to relive past glories or atone for past mistakes perhaps?

WEDNESDAY – A very clever course which had competitors at a head-scratching standstill for quite some time at Dandenong Creek.  This time around it’s Blackburn South, a map bisected by the Wurundjeri Wetlands and Orchard Grove Reserve.  With Eley Park and Holland Gully to the south, there’s plenty of green space to enjoy.

MACEDON RANGES – This series has found a new fan base this summer.  It returns on Wednesday at Sunbury, continuing for the next four weeks through till late February.  Macedon Ranges Wrap

THURSDAY – read about last week’s friendly visitor to Montmorency! As competitors sweated it out in high temperatures, this cat kept its cool.  This week’s temperature is a much more manageable 21 degrees.  At Donvale Pines, you’ll enjoy a lovely downhill to the Mullum Creeklands which hug the eastern edge of the map.

GEELONG AND SURF COAST – the final Surf Coast event on Saturday wrapped up a very successful seaside series for another year, which featured record attendances.  The Queenscliff course included fabulous views across the The Rip, heritage architecture throughout the town and the historic fort. This week sees the return of the Geelong Series at Jan Juc.  Cliffside trails with ocean views, and undulating terrain with interlinked parks, make for a most enjoyable experience.
