Saturday Event Report

Eaglemont Flats

After what has been a very warm April, the weather gods finally had their fun and turned on a real drenching, accompanied by wild wind gusts. But orienteers are a tough lot, and we were rewarded by blue skies and sunshine just before Go time at 2pm, with the next band of showers holding off until courses were completed, post mortems were held, and cake was eaten. Great to see plenty of new faces and families along – welcome!

It was the debut of the new Saturday Park Series, kicked off at Eaglemont Flats with a great map and courses by Fredrik. Although the parkland formed only a narrow strip along the river, and a couple of green pockets south of the freeway, you could get to all 20 controls and barely set foot on bitumen – requiring map reading and navigation to be stepped up a little. This was reflected in some of the scores.

There was plenty of distance available, with only the A course winner, Damian, able to score a full 70 points. Helen came very close with 68 points, and Tony was third with 64. On B, Peter D managed to grab the most points with 48, followed closely by Phil and Victoria with 45 apiece. On the PW course, Vic snatched a one point victory with 55 points to Robert’s 54, and Ian M was third on 48, just ahead of a cluster on 47, 46 and 45.

Park events are included in overall results, which have been calculated for those with 3 or more events. Your best 12 scores will be used to calculate your final tally over the 22 weeks. Lauris has a one point lead over Sutart on A course, with Tony and Steven tied for third. Victoria is two points ahead of Pete. Ian M leads PW from Derek and Ian S.

We take a short break next Saturday, then return on the 28th at Yarraman. This is followed by our next Park event at Truganina on May 5, then our first 2018 EndurO at Ashburton on May 12. See you out there!
