What's a DuO
The Silva DuO Series is a sprint distance adventure race series involving running and mountain biking legs with an element of navigation.
You can take the race at whatever pace you like – as hard or as easy as you want. We want everyone to be able to have a go, challenge themselves, but above all, have fun!
The event is for all ages and abilities, male or female, solo competitors, pairs (two competitors complete the entire course together) and relay team (one person does the running, another does the bike ride).
Courses
Two course lengths to choose from. Approximate distances are:
  Long:  Run 5km,  Ride 18km,  Run 3km
Short: Run 3km,  Ride 9km,  Run 2km

The estimated winning times for the race will be approx. 2 hours for the long course and 1 hour for the short. The race will require you to find checkpoints using the provided map to navigate your way around the course.

For first timers, there will be a brief coaching session on the morning of the race. The navigation is quite straight forward and anyone capable of using the Melways to get to the event, is more than able to complete these races without getting lost.

If you have not competed in navigation sports before, we strongly advise you to enter the short course for your first race. There is a time cut off, so we want to make sure you are able to finish the course, rather than run out of time.

Maps and Navigation
The course is kept secret until the day of the race. Specially prepared colour maps will be used with all checkpoints pre-marked. You will receive your first map as you start the first run leg, so you’re going to be planning your route as you go! There is a separate map for each leg. You will receive the map for each following leg as you pass through the timing gate in the transition area. Detailed final instructions will be emailed to all entrants in the week prior to the race. On race day, there will be a race briefing to answer any final queries.

The first run leg of each race will have a "free choice" format, which means you must visit a specified number of check points in any order you choose. This will enable competitors to head off in various directions to visit the required number of check points. The bike leg and the second run leg may also be "free choice" format, or they could be what is called a "line" format. "Line" format means you must visit the controls in number order. ie. Check point number 1, followed by no. 2, then no. 3 etc, etc. These race details will be specified in the "Final Instructions" and will be further explained at the briefing. They will also be specified on each leg map.
Gear

• Compass. Don’t have one? You can purchase a quality Silva compass on race day.
  • Whistle. Remember – 3 long blasts  if you’re in real trouble
  • Water. Bottle on bike, camel back for the run legs. There won’t be any water on the course. Make sure you leave a bottle or two at your bike in the transition for a drink at changeovers. It is summer and it could be hot!
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Mountain bike and  helmet. Some people use flat pedals to avoid changing into SPD’s – your   choice.
  • Mapboard. These fit onto your handlebars and make navigating while riding a whole heap easier. You don’t have to race with one but if you’d like to purchase one, here are two you could choose from: Windchill Mapboards or Miry Mapboards
