Adventure Series

These events are sprint distance adventure races involving running legs with a straight-forward navigation challenge, in beautiful native and pine forests close Melbourne.

You can take the race at whatever pace you like – as hard or as easy as you want. We want everyone to be able to have a go, challenge themselves, but above all, have fun!

We’re not charging a fortune to enter to cover the cost of expensive prizes that only a handful of competitors get to take home (there will be some prizes though). That’s because we’re all volunteers doing it for the love of racing and not for profit. When was the last time you did an adventure race for under $50?

The event is for all ages and abilities, Male and Female, solo competitors and most events allow teams of two.

The estimated winning times for the races will be approx. 2 hours for the long courses and 1 hour for the shorter ones.

The race will require you to find checkpoints using a map to navigate (if you’re not sure how to navigate there’ll be someone on hand on the morning of the race to give you a ‘crash course’ – be there early!).

Detailed colour maps will be used for the race with checkpoints pre-marked. You will receive your first map as you start so you’re going to be planning your route as you go!

This combination of The Amazing Race and Street Orienteering was run on Saturday from 9:30am to 1:30pm.  Designed as lots of fun for both families and the keener orienteer or runner, it required cryptic clue analysis, simple street map reading, puzzle solving, physical and mental challenges plus a little bit of luck.  As usual, it was a great way for teams of 2,3 or 4 to get a bit of exercise and raise funds for local charities.

This year the challenges included 10-pin bowling, dressing up in opera costumes, throwing tennis balls and using gym exercise equipment - each team had to row, run and cycle a set distance with team members taking turns to complete the required distances as fast as possible.  Along the way we had to collect business cards from 8 different Ballarat Estate Agents - a challenge best done before noon when many offices shut!

Undoubtedly the highlight this year was the challenge to learn a short pole-dancing routine - yes, we said pole dancing!  A certain un-named OV Board member was seen performing this challenge with surprising skill.  (Hint: the President and VP Craig F. were in Canberra at the annual OA conference and it wasn't the Treasurer or the ex-Prez).

All teams enjoyed the event with a growing number of local, non-orienteers, stepping up for the challenge.  Well done to Mark Valentine for creating a unique event.  We'll be back again next year to see what Mark and his team can come up with!
