73 competitors tackled the hills around Old Quartz Hill. Castlemaine is a really lovely place to ride and a wide variety of

riding skills are required in this very varied terrain. To top it off, it was a lovely sunny day except for one shower. People

seemed happy to have a 600m ride from the parking/registration area to the start/finish, which alleviated the necessity of

hiring a toilet. The start was selected for the fantastic network of single track just north of there. Unfortunately, the Parks

Victoria permit excluded riding on these single tracks so competitors never got to enjoy a really challenging little area.

The event was not without some small dramas. Unbeknown to the organizers, McGrath Street, which was the road in the

directions to turn off the Pyrenees Hwy, looped around, and came out further back on the highway. The result was that

many people turned into the “first” McGrath St causing quite a lot of confusion. Luckily it was in fact the same street, so

people eventually came to the reserve, just from the wrong direction.

 

The first control was removed and thrown into the bush some time between being put out and 11am. Fortunately Tony

Clark, who was the first starter, hunted around and found it and placed it back at the right spot. A big thank you to Tony.

Another control was also stolen (never found) after the event had finished, but before we got there to collect it.

 

Yet again the Sheahans’ wonderful coffee and cake proved a real winner creating a social hub which really added to the

event atmosphere. Thank you to Dion Keech and Jim Russell for their help on the day, and to the Wesley Hill Football

Club for use of the facilities.
