Weather Cool with light rain most of the day
- resulting is some pretty slippery tracks, but fortunately no major stacks.
Several people got rather mud spattered and a few had a couple of falls in the
greasy conditions. But it is winter here in the central highlands - and close
to the winter solstace (June 22nd) - light faded fast about 4.30pm. This is the
last event before mid-August, so the course setters gave everyone their money's
worth!
Special thanks to the Eureka Orienteers - Margaret,
Dale, Dick, Richard, Russell, Mark, Alan - who gave up their ride to help out
all day in wintery conditions.
Comments One of the competitors lost his map while
half-way around the Course 3. His solution was to ride to a corner (with an
o-sign) and just wait until someone came along. Well no orienteers appeared -
but as luck would have it - a friendly 4-wheel driver did - and drove him, bike
and all, back to the finish! It is
hard to finish the course without a map! Dick Barker who looked after the start
all day noted that many beginning orienteers had no idea that a triangle
represented the start and a double circle the finish. With the large number of
newcomers, or riders with one or two courses completed, we must continue to
improve our pre- and post-race discussions to get them into gear and
understanding our sport from the ground up!
It was great to see our Victorian members of the
Australian team to Slovakia -Adrian, Alex, Carolyn and Tony - taking advantage
of the slippery conditions to test how these wet conditions affect their
technique. We wish them all well - though Tony will not be able to go due to
lack of recreation leave and money. We'll folllow theri progress on
